OUR ACTIVITIES

Akademia Foundation primarily focuses on bringing accessible ideas of social memory, history, archaeology, culture and art to the local community in Bodrum and the surrounding region.  Our main aim is to create social and cultural awareness within these themes from the academic world.  This is achieved through projects and events based on its motto of “does not love without knowing, does not protect without loving”.
Promoting understanding of the significance of ancient Halicarnassos, an important cultural and artistic city of the Mediterranean region, is a central and ongoing project. Akademia Foundation holds conferences, symposiums, exhibitions, competitions in schools, and releases book publications for the community, in order to promote Bodrum and the region’s historical and cultural heritage.

Herodotus
The “Herodotus History Conferences” series organized since 2017 in Herodotus’s name has brought together prominent academics from the region’s ancient city excavation projects. Projects regarding Herodotus, as both a past native of Halikarnassos and “The Father of History”, are key to promoting awareness of Bodrum’s rich history. The local community is proud to have had Herodotus as their ancestor.
Underwater Archaeology
Bodrum and the surrounding region has experienced much in the way of historically important underwater archaeological discoveries. These have also been celebrated through the endeavours of Akademia Foundation. The “International Underwater Archaeology Symposium”, in association with The German Institute of Underwater Archaeology, gathered academics from 42 countries to share and disseminate knowledge in this field.
Halikarnassus’ Mausoleum
The “International Mausoleum Workshop” was organized to promote awareness of King Mausolous’ Mausoleum, one of the seven wonders of the world located in Bodrum. In association with this endeavour, the Foundation organised the “International Bodrum Castle Restoration Workshop” on behalf of The Ministry of Culture and Bodrum Municipality.
The Foundation has ongoing education and social awareness-raising activities regarding the Mausoleum through presentations, distribution of Mausoleum models and competitions in schools.

Ongoing projects
There are two important archaeological projects in progress under the directorship of the Akademia Foundation. The first is the Halicarnassus Mausoleum Museum Project, and the second is the Ancient Halicarnassus Wall Project. Support and sponsorship is essential for these to progress.
Akademia Foundation will also continue to organise cultural and art events in the Foundation’s art gallery, conference room and gardens in the centre of Bodrum. During the summer especially, local history lovers gain detailed information about the archaeological and historical studies carried out in the region, with seminars conducted by the excavation directors of historical sites in the Carian region.
Likewise, leading philosophers of the country come together in the gardens of the Foundation to hold talks in pursuit of the desire to understand humanity and the meaning of life. These talks are conducted at a level that a non-specialist can understand.
Many national and international artists have been invited to hold sole or group exhibitions in the art gallery or gardens of the Foundation. The local community can enjoy fine art, sculpture, photography and engraving, for example, free of charge.
A new addition to the Akademia Foundation education programme for the local community is the history, philosophy, archaeology and art workshops scheduled in the winter months.
Akademia Foundation is proud to contribute to the development of Bodrum's cultural richness with these ongoing projects.
